Data-Driven Decision Support for Improved Water Security in East Africa

Munishi Photo: Nairobi River Pollution Credit: khyk54, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons. Wait! Yes, you. Stop for one moment and work with us on this one. Imagine a world without fresh water. Now imagine a world without clean fresh water; regardless of whether it is in plenty or scarce, it is all polluted. It’s green and turbid, or with floating debris and other solid waste, maybe even smelling. And keep in mind, not all pollutants lead to visible pollution. Then look at the shore, see the dead fish, even they could not stand it any longer. Older members of society might reflect on how they used to play in the river or swim in the lake when they were little children. Now a walk along any of these could even be repulsive. Children might be warned to stay away from the water because they could get sick. Sure, the water can be treated (we know you are thinking it) but did you know that treatment processes may not always remove all pollutants in water? Of course, if there isn’t…

Prof. Bancy Mati was in Ahero and West Kano irrigation schemes in Kisumu County in July 2022

Prof. Bancy Mati  was in  Ahero and West Kano irrigation schemes in Kisumu County in July 2022. There, she implemented some activities in each scheme including: Presentation of rotary weeders to farmers as an incentive of the on-going project  “delivering digital training on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) for Kenyan farmers through digital learning. The project is implemented by Resource Plan and Arifu  of Kenya  and funded by The Perivoli Foundation of the United Kingdom. While in both Ahero and West Kano irrigation Schemes, Prof. Mati also trained famers on the use of the digital SRI learning App, which has eight modules. The App is accessible via SMS from both smart and non-smart mobile phones. The farmers learnt quickly how to use the SRI digital learning APP and were enthusiastic about making use of it.

Delivering Digital Training on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Kenya

Background to SRI adoption in Kenya The System of Rice Intensification (SRI), is a proven technology for growing rice in paddies, which incredibly increases yields while using less water among other benefits. Furthermore, SRI is a green technology which holds promise for food security, water savings, health and environmental benefits and improved productivity of rice. SRI was introduced in Kenya at the Mwea Irrigation Scheme in 2009, through research and capacity building of various cadres of stakeholders, awareness creation and policy advocacy to ensure that SRI was well known and accepted by rice sector actors. In 2011, SRI was introduced to rice-growing farmers in western Kenya. The System was further promoted through on-site demonstrations, exchange visits, outreach activities and publicity. Driven by positive results in terms of higher rice yields, water savings, better grain quality, health benefits of working in SRI paddies and farmer experiences, adoption of SRI steadily rose. In 2016, SRI was further promoted in Ahero, West Kano and South West Kano Irrigation Schemes, through training and some incentives, mostly inputs and push weeders. By this time, it was estimated that some 5,000 farmers had adopted SRI in Kenya. However, since 2016, the promotion of SRI in Kenya dwindled…
